The Wrath & the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh is the first book in a duality with the second book The Rose & the Dagger as a conclusion.
I wanted to read
this for a very long time, a retelling of my favorite childhood stories A
Thousand and One Nights,
I was very excited
mostly because this book wasn’t spoiled for me, I didn’t read any reviews or
had any idea what to expect and here's my honest opinion.
First of all Renee
Ahdieh is amazingly talented author, her writing style is very likeable and
flawless.
Her take on the tale
is that instead of focusing on the tales that Shahrzad tells the Caliph, Ahdieh is focusing on what happens between them and the progress of their relationship
and personalities as a whole.
The world building
in this book is beyond beautiful, everything is described in such poetic way
that it grows on you over time and you find yourself wanting more of it.
I loved the use of
the language, it gave the story much more authenticity and the fact that at the
last page of the book you can find meaning of the words is sweet.
I had a minor
problem with the story and it was Shahrzad's wardrobe because, like the
disney's princess jasmine she wasn't dressed properly. The history of persian
attire doesn’t have that much of revealing outfits in it especially that she
was wearing it in front of people other than the Caliph (her husband) which
isn't socially expectable back then.
The other problem
is, I understand that this is a fantacy and that it doesn’t have to be
completely accurate however, every time a character says "by zues" or
" holy hira" it annoyes me! Maybe because the names and location of
this story doesn’t add up.
My overall thoughts:
-It was quite lovely,
the world building and the character development was flawless.
-It was a thriller
but not a quick pase one but I didn’t mind that.
I recommend it to
lovers of the tale that are looking for different "soul" for the
story.
- I give this a solid 4 stars.
I really hope you enjoyed this!
